Russian Railways owns 99% of the railways in Russia with a total length of 85 thousand km (with the exception of a number of railways operated by private companies), stations and train stations, depots and dispatch systems.

The total length of the operational length of railway tracks in Russia is 122 thousand km, including 86.6 thousand km of public tracks (44.1 thousand km electrified) and 35 thousand km of non-public tracks (on the territories of enterprises and in places of development minerals) in terms of the total length of Russia ranks third in the world.

The Russian track (1520 mm) is used in Russia, Mongolia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Latvia, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and parts of Poland. Track gauges in other countries are shown on the world track gauge map.

Currently, the most used docking stations are located in the Republic of Belarus near the city of Brest. On both sides of the borders of neighboring states, there are railway tracks, both Russian and European gauge. In some of these docking points, cargo reloading and (or) passenger transfer is carried out, and in some part, the rearrangement of wagons (replacement of wagon bogies) is carried out. There are also systems for automatic gauge change. For several years, the Spanish train Talgo has been running on the Moscow-Berlin route, for which a track gauge change station has been set up in Brest on the move.
